What this lesson covers

  1. 01

    Unlock is an assessment decision

An unlock rule answers one question: what evidence must exist before the next experience opens? Time in seat and video percentage are easy for an LMS to store and weak as evidence. Prefer a scored practice, a manager sign-off or a work product, and say which LTEM tier you are claiming.

  2. 02

    Unlock patterns

Rule | Evidence | Honest claim

    Video 80% watched | Player data | Tier 1 to 2: exposure

Practice gate 80% | Scored items on the action | Tier 5 if items are realistic decisions

Manager sign-off | Observed checklist | Tier 6 to 7 if the checklist reflects real work

Test-out | Passing the gate before the content | Same tier as the gate; skips content

  3. 03

What your LMS can actually record

SCORM records completion, a score and a pass or fail status for a package. It does not record a manager's observation or a work product unless someone builds that. If your unlock rule depends on manager sign-off, check that the platform supports a sign-off task or an observation checklist, or that xAPI statements from another tool can reach it. Design the rule first, then check the platform. Rules quietly downgraded to "watched the video" because the LMS could not do better are a common reason pathways fail audits.

  4. 04

    Write your unlock rules

Write one unlock rule for each milestone on your map, with the tier it claims. Check with your LMS administrator whether each can be recorded. Mark any gap. This completes the rule column in your pathway map.
