CEPD · Module 1 — Production systems and SAM sprints
Production is not decorating a script. Choosing a format (quiz, drag, process, branch) is instructional design inside the authoring tool.

A writer sends 14 slides of policy text with a note: "Please make it interactive." Two hours later a developer has added click-to-reveal tabs to every slide. The course is now interactive and still asks the learner to do nothing the job requires. The developer chose a format, passive reading with extra clicks, without anyone deciding it.
02
Innovito Studio offers 70+ slide types because different jobs need different practice. A production director who defaults every screen to title, bullets and Next has chosen passive reading. That choice has a learning cost (coherence, no retrieval, no decision) and a business cost: minutes of learner time with no practice in them.
03
Default deck: Eight bullet slides on the escalation policy. · Click-to-reveal definitions. · Ten-question recall quiz at the end.
Directed production: One short explanation, then four cases where the learner decides whether to escalate. · A glossary the learner opens when a term blocks a decision. · Scenario gate on the decisions the course rehearsed.

Vendors often price by "interactivity level" (passive, limited, moderate, complex). The levels describe build effort, not learning value. A complex simulation for a low-risk procedure wastes budget; a passive page for a high-risk judgment wastes the learner's time. Decide the level per action from the action map: highest-risk decisions get the richest practice, routine lookups get a job aid. When a client asks for "Level 3 throughout", ask which actions justify it.
05
For the course in your production plan, list every screen with: the job verb it serves, the format chosen, and why. Any screen with no verb is a candidate to cut or convert to a job aid.
